Gorillas and Chimpanzee FAQ's

There are two gorilla trekking destinations in Uganda that’s, Bwindi Impenetrable National park and Mgahinga National park however Bwindi is the most popular choice as the park contains a high number of gorillas on the other hand,

You can do Chimpanzee tracking/trekking experience in Kibale Forest National Park with over 1,000 chimpanzees and other 13 primate species and 90% chance of sighting the chimps.

Budongo Forest Reserve in Murchison Falls National Park, this gives you chance to do a game drive, a boat cruise and a hike to the top of epic falls. The chance of sighting the chimps here is 80%.

Kyambura Gorge in Queen Elizabeth National Park also known as the Valley of apes, the chance here of seeing the chimps is 50%.

Gorillas can be visited at any time of year it’s only but it’s more suitable during the dry season which is between June to September and December to February. Uganda’s equatorial climate  has consistent temperatures all year round thus favoring Gorilla tracking experience.

The best time to go for chimpanzee trekking in Uganda is during the dry seasons of June to September and December to February however the climate in Uganda favors Chimpanzee tracking experience through out the year.

Tracking Gorillas requires a moderate level of fitness. Get prepared to trek through a challenging terrain of steep ridges and valleys, in the animal paths through tangled undergrowth for almost 3 hours though you can sometimes get in contact with the apes within 30 minutes of trekking or and other times 4+ hours.

In rainy seasons, the trekking routes can become very slippery and more challenging. On average you can trek up to 6 hours.

Chimpanzees are highly active and can move through the forest where by your required to move quickly at short notice to keep up with them since they don’t settle in one spot for  a while. Chimps stay at a low altitude and during the rainy seasons they tend to stay up in trees. Just incase, expect a chimp trek to last for 3 to 5 hours.

 

All you have to do is to keep your skin covered up to protect from ants and forest thorny plants.

Consider wearing 

  • Waterproof trekking boots and light water proof pants/trousers. 
  • Rain coat/jacket
  • Outdoor gloves in case you need to touch plants in the thick tropical rain forest.
  • Light weight water proof backpacker where you can carry water for drinking or mobile phone.

You will be provided with the walking sticks and bottled drinking water.

The current permit fees for Gorillas as of 2021-2021 is USD 700 per person and your supposed to book in advance since in peak seasons they are sold out.

Chimpanzee permits are attract a charge of USD 200 per person.
